Climate and Innovation - The department (formerly Sustainability and Innovation) has a new name!

From community engagement to transnational collaboration, from just transition to local green hydrogen, and from gender equality to innovative science communication, the diverse work areas of the department have a common denominator: their overlap with climate. The new name underlines IKEM's ambition to identify and bring to use new approaches for dealing with the climate crisis.  

The second, completely revised edition of Energierecht und Energiewirklichkeit published by Energie & Management has been released. The handbook, edited by Prof. Christian Held and Dr. Simon Schäfer-Stradowsky, introduces readers to the basics of energy law and explains to them, using practical examples, how the energy world works.

With a new partnership, the IKEM and the Novia University of Applied Sciences (Finland) want to advance transnational research on the energy and mobility transition in the Baltic Sea region. From 2023 onwards, projects on sustainability in shipping, green care and ecosystem services are going to be developed for this purpose. A cooperation agreement was signed at a joint workshop in Berlin at the end of December.

Decarbonizing the building sector is an important part of the energy transition, but little progress has been made in this area so far. In order to be able to use more renewable energy and to stabilize the energy system, individual buildings or entire neighborhoods must be able to react flexibly to fluctuating energy generation from wind and sun in the future. In FlexGeber, IKEM's analysis uncovered legal barriers that currently prevent the use of the flexibility potential in the building sector.
