Our research as a contribution to the reconstruction of Ukraine

Hi ,

We are particularly proud of this announcement from October: together with representatives of the Ukrainian government and the European Commission, we presented studies in Brussels that show a way forward for the future of the Ukrainian energy system. Together with our Ukrainian and European partners, we want to continue this work in the newly founded Europe-Ukraine Energy Transition Hub and thus contribute to the reconstruction of the country.

Our second focus in the October newsletter is road freight transport: on the one hand, it forms the backbone of our economic system and, on the other hand, it is one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in transport. Precisely because the sector has to take big steps towards decarbonisation in the next few years, the topic was the focus of our Annual Conference! We would also like to draw your attention to our opinion piece in the Tagesspiegel Background on the potential of Electric Road Systems to decarbonise heavy freight transport.

In addition, we present three publications that illustrate the range of IKEM's expertise: from a report on the role of energy law in the German energy transition, to a feasibility study on the potential of a hydrogen economy in the Havelland region, to a short analysis of the legal framework for an accelerated expansion of hydrogen import terminals.

Last but not least, take a look at our events in November: At the next edition of the Forum Wärmewende on 9 November, we will discuss municipal heat planning with renowned experts, and on 30 November, we cordially invite you to the launch of our Gender Equality Toolkit.

We hope you enjoy the read!

Until next time,

Launch of the Europe-Ukraine Energy Transition Hub (EUETH)
EUETH website

Together with its Ukrainian, European and international partners, IKEM launched the Europe-Ukraine Energy Transition Hub (EUETH) in Brussels on 25 October. High-ranking representatives of the Ukrainian government and the European Commission, including Minister of Economic Affairs Yuliia Svyrydenko and Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič, were briefed on the work of the EUETH, which will support the reconstruction of the Ukrainian energy system in its role as an independent research platform based in Berlin and Kyiv. The scientific basis of the EUETH is formed by extensive technical, legal and economic studies, which were also presented at the event.

“The discussions at the Annual Conference highlighted a pressing concern: The logistics industry is facing significant challenges due to CO2 pricing for tolls and fuels, and it eagerly anticipates clear directives from policymakers. The German government must promptly make a decisive choice regarding a specific technology or a technology mix.”

— Susan Wilms, Managing Director at IKEM

At the IKEM Annual Conference on October 19, renowned experts presented their climate protection strategies for road freight transport. The presentations and subsequent discussions highlighted the challenges currently facing the industry and the urgent need for clear guidance and support from policymakers.

Climate communication for more acceptance in the energy transition

How can we inspire citizens to get involved in climate protection and how can we increase acceptance of the energy transition? Johanna Grosche, Research Associate at IKEM, deals with various facets of these questions - from tools such as the Energiewende-O-Mat to the use of TikTok for climate communication and the promotion of social participation in the energy transition. In October, she was a guest at the lunchtalk "Soup & Science", which was organised by the Technology Foundation Berlin and rbb24 Inforadio as part of the action week "Berlin Saves Energy". The recording of the talk is now available in the ARD Audiothek.

Legal measures to accelerate the development of hydrogen import terminals

This new short analysis from the IKEM project TransHyDE examines the applicability of acceleration measures, such as those found in the LNG Acceleration Act, for the construction and commissioning of hydrogen import terminals. Legal aspects are analysed as well as technical-logistical requirements to enable a hydrogen import infrastructure for different transport technologies.
