IKEM welcomes new Managing Director

Hi ,

We have some important news for you right at the start: Judith Schäfer-Gendrisch - previously head of our Energy Law department - has been appointed Managing Director of IKEM this month! We look forward to working with her and to introducing our colleague to you in this newsletter.

And of course, as always, we will be reporting on our work, which received widespread media attention in February: Johanna Grosche from our Climate and Innovation department was a guest on the rbb Abendschau programme, where she spoke about climate communication and the importance of positive narratives in the fight against climate change. And our colleague Simon Großmann from the Energy Law department explained how building automation can promote climate protection in the building sector in the Tagesspiegel Background Climate and Energy.

Finally, we would like to share four events with you: In March, we will be discussing the cross-border interoperability of electric vehicles in the USER-CHI project webinar and will be represented at the DVAG Retail Symposium on the interdependence of mobility and retail. We would also like to invite you to the second innovation workshop of the ENGAGE project and encourage you to participate in the Climate Democracy Day.

We hope you enjoy the read!

Until next time,

The IKEM Communications Team

Climate communication: talking about the weather in the right way

Extreme weather events, rising sea levels, loss of biodiversity - when people discuss climate change, the conversation typically revolves around the severe consequences of global warming. It is crucial to move beyond this emphasis on the negative and instead spotlight opportunities, inspiring individuals to actively participate.

The Energiewende-O-Mat, a part of the IKEM research project ENGAGE, is now contributing to this shift. It connects dedicated individuals with climate protection and energy transition projects in their neighborhoods. In the climate minute of the rbb evening program, Johanna Grosche, research associate at IKEM, discusses the Energiewende-O-Mat and explores what a positive and engaging narrative about climate change can entail

Building automatisation/ facade-1057799_1920-1
Building automation is an unutilised climate protection joker

Facade insulation, triple glazing and heat pumps: when it comes to climate protection in the building sector, politicians are focusing on modernisation and replacing heating systems. However, building automation is already a cheap and efficient third option that has been underutilised to date. Simon Großmann, research associate at IKEM, and Dr Severin Beucker from the Borderstep Institute argue in the latest issue of Tagesspiegel Background Energie und Klima that politicians should therefore create a heat-rent-neutral levy option to provide targeted investment incentives. The opinion piece is based on the authors' recently published policy brief.

Legal considerations of global trade in green hydrogen & Power-to-X

Projections suggest that between 12 and 25 per cent of the globally available green hydrogen will be traded internationally by 2050. The extent to which the market will ultimately grow depends largely on economic developments and legal conditions for imports and exports.

This new report by IKEM provides a comprehensive overview of the applicable regulations for hydrogen trading, covering topics such as global governance for hydrogen trading, the structure of trading components, regulation of imports and exports, standardisation and certification, safety requirements, legal metrology and transport.

DVAG Symposium 2024

The mobility transition aims to make mobility more socially just and environmentally friendly. However, traffic and urban planning measures to reduce traffic have faced criticism from many representatives of the local economy. Those affected fear additional hurdles for the accessibility of their stores, declining sales, and, in the medium term, the outright closure of stores. At the DVAG Symposium 2024, “Retail & Mobility – Emotions, Experiences, Empiricism,” on March 15, Dr. Alexandra Appel, Head of the IKEM Mobility Department, will join other experts on a panel to discuss the topic of “Mobility and Retail: What does the research say?
