Building bridges – Interdisciplinary research on sustainability

Hi ,

Innovative solutions for multidimensional problems: starting this month, a research directorate will support IKEM's work with expertise in law, economy, transport, geography, and political science. To find out more about the contribution of this newly established body and its members, we spoke to Prof. Dr. Jelena Bäumler (Leuphana University Lüneburg) and Prof. Dr. Susanne Stoll-Kleemann (University of Greifswald) about interdisciplinary approaches and sustainability research.

We also report on our latest publications – including the most recent issue of the IKEM publication series, an editorial on the start of the seventh assessment cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and a lecture on gender equality in environmental law. Our colleague Ievgeniia Kopytsia has also summarised the key findings of the SB60 climate negotiations in Bonn.

As always, we also look back on the events of the month – highlights were our discussion on the future of the Ukrainian energy sector and the first edition of the Rural Mobility Transition Forum – and we invite you to upcoming events: the final event of the ENGAGE project and the IKEM Academy are just around the corner.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue!

Until next time,

The IKEM Communications Team

Legal barriers to the energy modernisation of dwellings occupied by low-income tenants and opportunities to overcome these barriers

The fifth volume of the IKEM publication series has been published by Springer Verlag. Dr. Jana Karras' dissertation deals with the legal obstacles to the energy modernisation of residential properties occupied by low-income tenants. As a possible solution to the landlord-tenant dilemma, she proposes special financing instruments for modernisation measures based on the Swedish model.

Climate protection needs innovations - and competitive companies that develop them to market maturity

To ensure that technologies for decarbonisation and the energy transition continue to be successfully developed and produced in Europe, we are calling on the European Investment Bank (EIB), together with 38 other organisations, to expand its bank guarantees for the cleantech sector. This could strengthen European competitiveness in this sector in the long term.
