This panel discussion will bring together representatives of the Europe-Ukraine Energy Transition Hub (EUETH), the Ukrainian government and the European Commission, as well as European and American experts on climate and energy policy, to explore pathways for a swift implementation of the reforms needed for Ukraine to rebuild a functioning energy market as well as strategies to align itself with EU regulations and to achieve its climate goals. It will take place on 14 November from 13:00 to 14:30 at the Ukrainian Pavilion. 

This side event organised by IKEM and OSZE is dedicated to the connection between climate and energy and associated security risks – especially in developing countries. It will take place on 18 November from 11:30 to 13:00.

This panel, hosted by IKEM, EUETH, IFZO and Mistra Geopolitics brings together experts in climate science, environmental peacebuilding, and nature conservation. They will discuss innovative approaches to climate-resilient environmental stewardship that not only mitigate and adapt to climate change but also contribute to lasting peace and stability. It will take place on 19 November from 11:00 to 13:30 at the Ukrainian Pavilion. 

For this project, IKEM examines the legal feasibility of financial policy instruments to promote PtL kerosene for aviation. PtL kerosene, a synthetically produced fuel, offers a climate-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. IKEM analyses funding instruments for their compatibility with German and European law in order to support the development and use of this sustainable fuel.

This practical project investigates the framework conditions for commercial grid operation of overhead line trucks. The project aims to further develop the eHighway system, in which trucks are supplied with electricity via overhead lines while travelling. IKEM examines economic and regulatory factors that promote successful operationalisation.

In this project, IKEM analyses the legal adaptation requirements for the integration of electric road systems (ERS) on German motorways. These systems supply electric vehicles with energy while travelling and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in heavy goods traffic. The aim of the project is to identify the prerequisites for the expansion of ERS in existing transport and energy systems.

This project investigates the economic basis for the operation of biomethane cogeneration plants (CHP) under the new subsidy conditions of the EEG 2023. The aim is to promote biomethane as a flexible energy source, especially in times of low electricity production from renewable sources. IKEM is analysing the legal framework and the factors that influence the pricing of biomethane.

On 9 and 10 October, the annual conference by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Baltic Sea Region Research (IFZO) took place in Greifswald under the title ”Fragmented Transformations in the Baltic Sea Region: The Role of Innovations and Pioneers of Change“. The Energy Research Cluster, headed by IKEM Director Prof. Dr Michael Rodi, organised a panel of high-ranking experts to discuss the protection of critical infrastructure and negative emission technologies.

The last edition of Forum Wärmewende took place on 10 October under the topic ”Rethinking the heating transition: digitalisation as a driver for a sustainable energy transition“. The consensus of the discussions was that the transformation will not succeed without digitalisation and a networked energy system.

On 18 September, the Institute for Transport and Mobility (IVR) at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences celebrated its 20th anniversary under the slogan of ”Active in the transport transition for 20 years – looking back and ahead“. Matthias Hartwig, Head of the Mobility Department at the IKEM, took part in a panel discussion on the engine transition in transport.

On 17 October, the WeRobot conference, an interdisciplinary conference on the legal framework for robots, took place in Berlin for the first time. Markus Lehnshack presented the report of the rokit project and spoke about the legal hurdles faced by manufacturers of robots for public spaces.

In a Tagesspiegel article, Matthias Hartwig makes the case that autonomous vehicles can counteract the high number of accidents. Since more than 90 per cent of all accidents are caused by human error, autonomous vehicles can help by prioritising compliance with traffic regulations.

Matthias Hartwig was invited to be a guest speaker on 5 November at the Faculty of Law at Leibniz Universität Hannover for the lecture series ”Automated Systems“. His lecture titled ”Driverless: How will robots, autonomous and remote-controlled vehicles get on the road?“ deals with the legal framework of autonomisation.

The next edition of the Berlin Energy Round Table on 17 December will deal with current developments in the gas world. The evening will start with a presentation by Marco Gehring, Regional Head of Sales Region East at VNG AG. This is followed by a discussion and a cosy get-together.
