Ammonia – Fueling the Future?

Hi ,

After the federal elections on February 23, the coalition talks will now begin, with important decisions on future climate policy and energy supply on the agenda. During this period of reorientation, it is crucial to observe what measures are taken to drive forward the transformation towards a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply. One topic that will most likely continue to be front and center in discussions is the use of various green energy sources. For this newsletter, Judith Schäfer-Gendrisch, Managing Director of IKEM, gave us insights into the potential that ammonia can play in the decarbonization of the economy and the transport sector. We also talked about the challenges that are currently still associated with this and how a suitable legal framework could help.

We are pleased to introduce you to our new project BioNachRED and, as always, report on the latest publications – including a study on the legal framework for the approval of decentralized ammonia synthesis plants and an article on the climate policy positions in the election programs of the parties – as well as the events of the past month. We will also give you an outlook on upcoming events, including the IKEM Symposium on Climate Law and Policy taking place in April.

We hope you enjoy reading this edition of our newsletter!

Until next time,

The IKEM Communications Team

Interview mit Judith Schäfer-Gendrisch
“Ammonia can contribute to the decarbonisation of various sectors and drive the development of a green hydrogen .”

In this interview, we spoke to Judith Schäfer-Gendrisch, Managing Director of IKEM and expert in energy law, about the role of ammonia in the energy transition and the potential that this promising energy source can play in the decarbonization of different sectors. The discussion also focussed on the legal and infrastructural challenges associated with the increased use of ammonia and possible solutions through a suitable legal framework.

BioNachRED

In BioNachRED, IKEM develops recommendations for implementing the requirements of the European Union's revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) concerning biofuels. As part of the project, IKEM and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg (ifeu) are supporting the legal implementation of the resulting adaptation requirements. At the same time, the opportunity is being taken to improve and simplify the implementation of sustainability criteria. The aim is to remove obstacles, close regulatory gaps and clarify requirements.

The protection and restoration of Ukrainian ecosystems from an interdisciplinary and practical perspective in the context of environmental peacebuilding

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has had serious consequences for the country's extensive ecosystems, which are worthy of protection. Using the concept of environmental peacebuilding, Till Reinholz and Ievgeniia Kopytsia, among others, examine from an interdisciplinary and practical perspective how sustainable protection of endangered ecosystems and renaturation of ecosystems that have already been destroyed can succeed.
