Billions for climate change mitigation

Hi ,

Shortly after the German parliamentary elections at the end of February, a key point of contention in recent years - the reform of the debt limit - was quickly resolved: in addition to more money for defence and investment in infrastructure, 100 billion euros will now be allocated to the climate and transformation fund. In these turbulent times, this is extremely good news. We hope that the future coalition will use these funds as wisely as possible and that research funding will play an important role alongside investment. IKEM is happy to support them with its expertise.

Another piece of good news is the forthcoming founding of the European Association of Climate Law (EACL), in which IKEM is playing a key role. For this newsletter, we spoke to IKEM Director and EACL founding member Prof Dr Michael Rodi about the objectives of the association and the founding symposium in September.

As always, we also provide information on current publications and the most important events of the past month.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue!

Until next time,

AEEC conference

The eighth edition of the Transatlantic Energy Conference on 27 and 28 March focused on the question of what impact the current political shifts are having on transatlantic energy cooperation.

IKEM Managing Director Judith Schäfer-Gendrisch moderated a panel on the role of US LNG for the European energy supply. For her, the discussion emphasised that natural gas and LNG will continue to play a central role. At the same time, increased efforts are needed to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels in the long term.

Electric Road Systems

On 19 March, our colleagues Divy Gupte and Giverny Lindquist took part in a conference on ERS organised by the Dutch Ministry of Transport in The Hague as part of the E-CORE project. The central finding of the conference was that ERS could be an important fall-back option in the future - ERS should not replace other solutions, but rather strengthen the entire system.
