Our 2024 annual report provides a 52-page overview of IKEM’s work over the past year, highlighting key research findings, events, and publications from over 80 projects at the intersection of climate protection, energy, and mobility.

Government-imposed components of electricity pricing represent a key cost factor for operating thermal energy storage plants. In the "SecöndLife" project, Franziska Stamme and Rosa von der Stein analyzed these costs along the process “grid electricity input – conversion – storage – reuse,” highlighting fees, levies, and taxes. Together with Julie Hertel, they created this visual summary.

In the Shift-M project, IKEM’s Johann Helmann and Julie Hertel collaborated with Fabian Bergk and Hendrik Beeh (ifeu) to compile key data and insights on active mobility.

Germany’s new government faces major challenges in heat transition policy. Key questions remain, especially around the Building Energy Act reform, renewable heating, and the retrofit of existing buildings. These topics will be discussed at the upcoming Forum Wärmewende.

The European Association of Climate Law (EACL) will host its inaugural conference in Berlin, focusing on current legal developments, future challenges, and intergenerational justice in climate law.

At our scientific and strategic advisory board meeting in Meisenheim (26–27 June), participants developed ideas and strategies to address political uncertainties affecting the gas sector transition.

Emotions drive social change—including in the climate movement. Our colleague Anika Nicolaas Ponder spoke at the DO School Fellowships panel about the power of emotions and the role of female voices in the fight for climate justice.

On 19 June, E-CORE project partners met at IKEM to shape strategies for cross-border electrified freight transport. Key topics included traffic and energy analysis, charging infrastructure, smart charging strategies, and stakeholder engagement.

In the EnerKíte project, airborne wind energy is being tested in Ketzin. A recent workshop brought together local stakeholders, NGOs, and project staff to discuss public acceptance of this innovative technology.

IKEM experts participated in a workshop by the “Mobility Ecosystem 4.0” initiative on 3 June. The initiative aims to develop the digital foundations for on-demand autonomous transport.
