On the way to COP27

Hi ,

Winter is just around the corner, and concerns about war, increasing energy prices and economic instability have sent a chill through much of Europe. Meanwhile, perhaps the greatest existential threat of our times – climate change – continues to endanger life on a global scale.

These tumultuous events have raised the stakes for next month's COP27 climate talks in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, where participants from around the world will meet to discuss the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

In this month’s newsletter, we speak with Dr Kathleen Pauleweit and Dr Michael Kalis about last month's annual conference as well as their hopes for COP27.

Other topics include an infographic poster on the use of ammonia in shipping, updates on our research projects (including a just-released report), and a save-the-date for our conference on European energy law, which is set to take place next March.

Researchers exchange views on international climate law and policy

IKEM's Annual Conference, held on 11 October, focused on the global dimensions of climate change law and policy. The event, titled 'COP27: Advancing Global Climate Action', began with a session on international climate frameworks and the management of climate law disputes. This was followed by sessions on international climate policy in times of war and crisis.

IKEM releases infographic poster on benefits of green ammonia

As a climate-neutral fuel, green ammonia has the potential to pave the way for a sustainable shipping sector. This month, IKEM released an infographic poster outlining the remaining barriers to its use.

The ENGAGE Social Innovation Challenge called for creative ideas to encourage participation in the energy transition. This month, ENGAGE partners announced the winning projects: 'RevoluSUN', 'Peoples Power' and 'Co-Benefit'.

IKEM study: Legal certainty needed for customer installations

Installations located on customers' premises can provide low-cost energy for end users outside of the regulated energy grid. But a new IKEM study found that what qualifies as a 'customer installation' is far from clear – a problem that should be addressed through legislation.

New position paper published in Tagesspiegel Background

'The European energy transition is a better energy price cap,' writes Dr Simon Schäfer-Stradowsky, IKEM's managing director, in a position paper published this month. In the paper, he explains how structural reforms can address the causes of the energy crisis.

IKEM to host side event at COP27

On 17 November, IKEM will host a COP27 side event on climate-related dispute resolution with its partners Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) and the International Environmental Communication Association (IECA).

Save the date! Energy law conference on Europe's energy transition

Save the date for an energy law conference to be held in Berlin and Greifswald on 16–17 March 2023. The conference will offer an opportunity for attendees to exchange comparative perspectives on energy law in Europe.
