Unsurprisingly, COP27 is the key topic of our November newsletter. For two weeks, the global community met in Egypt to negotiate the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the future of climate change mitigation. But the deliberations yielded little progress on the expansion of renewables and the phase-out of fossil fuels. While the representatives were at least able to agree on a new financing mechanism for climate-related loss and damage, incremental advancements of this kind pale in comparison to the urgent action necessary to combat the climate crisis. During the conference’s second week, an IKEM delegation was on site in Egypt to track the developments. Members of IKEM's delegation were featured daily on the Energate podcast Irgendwas mit Energie, where they reported on the status of the climate negotiations. In this newsletter, we speak with our colleague Dr. Greta Reeh about the results of the conference, her personal impressions and her role as an NGO representative at COP. In this newsletter, we also take a closer look at IKEM’s official COP side event, where IKEM experts exchanged ideas with researchers from all over the world on strategies for resolving climate-related legal disputes. IKEM's conclusion: procedures like arbitration and mediation must be strengthened at a global level, and specialised mechanisms must be developed to resolve climate disputes. Other topics in this newsletter include a comprehensive review of the presentations at our annual conference in October, as well as newly released IKEM studies on electric road systems and the circular economy in the building sector.
