Teamwork makes the dream work

Hi ,

Working together can be challenging, but it's worth it! This is the experience we have gained from many of our projects. In BOWE2H, for example, we have come to the conclusion that increased transnational cooperation between the Baltic Sea countries can make a significant contribution to the rapid development of offshore wind energy and hydrogen projects in the region. You can find out what other forms of cooperation are important for the energy sector and for climate protection in our interview with IKEM Director Prof. Dr. Rodi.

The successful teamwork in our departments has also produced numerous results this month: The latest publications deal, among other things, with the legal framework for autonomous mobile robots, the sector coupling of electricity and transport and the promotion of citizen participation.

As always, we would like to invite you to our upcoming events: on 10 October, we will be discussing the role of digital innovations for the heat supply at the Forum Wärmewende and at COP29 in Baku in November, we will be hosting a side event with OECD on the interplay between climate protection, the energy sector and security.

Until next time,

The IKEM Communications Team

Highlight: Transnational cooperation in the Baltic Sea region
Prof. Dr. Michael Rodi bei der IKEM-Jahrestagung
„National energy systems have always been interlinked. The focus on renewable energies and the development of an international hydrogen economy will intensify this even further.“

— Prof. Dr. Michael Rodi, director of IKEM

In the recently completed BOWE2H project and within the framework of the Interdisciplinary Research Center IFZO at the University of Greifswald, IKEM is researching transnational cooperation on energy issues, focusing in particular on the Baltic Sea region. In this interview, Prof. Dr. Rodi talks about the reasons for this focal point of IKEM's research, the need for joint protection of critical infrastructures and the growing importance of comparative law for effective climate protection.

BOWE2H findings

The Baltic Sea region has considerable potential for offshore wind energy and the production of green hydrogen - this is shown by the analyses carried out as part of the three-year research efforts and stakeholder engagement in the BOWE2H project. The results have now been published in the form of a study and an infographic poster. They outline the current status as well as the challenges and opportunities for the expansion of offshore wind energy and hydrogen production in the Baltic Sea region.

Electric buses can offer system services

In the EUniS project, IKEM has investigated electric mobility concepts for the interaction between public transport and the energy industry and has now presented a legal study and recommendations for action. The result: public transport operators can in principle offer so-called system services with their electric buses, but a coherent legal framework is still lacking.
